I beleive that in Medieval Heraldry, the pelican was a symbol of redemption and self-sacrifice, as the story was told that if her baby died, the mother would peck at her breast with her beak until it bled, and her blood would revive her child.

English Ladyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17806974885775295349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7102067376746188002.post-5236075685955453372011-04-28T03:12:16.487-04:002011-04-28T03:12:16.487-04:00Exquisite. ;)Exquisite. ;)Thistlefurhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04611073209596597178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7102067376746188002.post-85230973030986181802011-04-27T22:38:11.698-04:002011-04-27T22:38:11.698-04:00I do have a lovely Éomer poster hanging on my clos...I do have a lovely Éomer poster hanging on my closet door, so I suppose that will do for now. :-)

Pictures of my costuming history: http://threadmaiden.blogspot.com/2011/04/h-is-for-history.html

And my kitties:
http://threadmaiden.blogspot.com/2011/04/k-is-for-kitties.htmlFaith Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17283912862858368153noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7102067376746188002.post-71714439309333416852011-04-27T22:18:39.610-04:002011-04-27T22:18:39.610-04:00I have never been to either Comic Con or Dragon Co...I have never been to either Comic Con or Dragon Con, so I think you do have me beat! Posting a review on it in another couple of days!

And his name is actually Sanskrit and means "ascending." But yeah, I thought the same thing when I first met him. When he introduced himself, I had to stop myself from saying, "As in Riders of?" That's a major accomplishment to be sure!

@Faith King: I love Serenity. Love the whole Firefly 'verse! Just watched it with my Rohan and got him hooked too. And yes, this last time watching Serenity, I definitely noticed the COleridge reference. Yet more proof of Whedon's brilliance . . . he also knows how to link his current stories with the greats of the past!

I like how you describe the growth of your story as organic. I think that is exactly why architypes and tropes happen . . . when you let things develop organically, natural patterns emerge. And it's so much better to love those paterns than to declare them hackneyed and start taking a Jackson Pollock approach just to be "original"!

I need to get my hands on a copy of your book . . . :)Anne Elisabeth Stenglhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09462605949792523331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7102067376746188002.post-19984243864857342312011-04-27T12:46:38.347-04:002011-04-27T12:46:38.347-04:00I'm grateful that I got through the 'somet...I'm grateful that I got through the 'something original' struggle earlier on in my writing journey. When Laura and I first sat down to hash out ideas for a fantasy series, we didn't really have an idea of any particular character or conflict-- we just wanted to write together. So our approach was more or less to list a whole bunch of fantasy tropes and decide if there were any in particular we'd like to avoid and which ones we really wanted to embrace, and otherwise let things happen organically. (The only 'AVOID' I can remember that we actually stuck to was the 'long lost royal heir'-- i.e. all of our poor orphans are exactly that).

Coleridge's albatross poem is also used in the film 'Serenity' directed by Joss Whedon, though admittedly not really as a Christ parallel, per se. Have you seen it? Fantastic movie.

I like the 'Tower' analysis a lot! A lot of people do not, in fact, know that most of Shakespeare's plays where reinterpretations of other literary works.Faith Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17283912862858368153noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7102067376746188002.post-81764680062470447952011-04-27T10:39:26.083-04:002011-04-27T10:39:26.083-04:00excellent article! I appreciate your thoughts and you make some great points. 'There's nothing new under the sun.' I have the storytelling stuff down extremely well, though there will always be room to grow. It's the literary side I still am a baby in. I'm hoping when I finish this last year of college I will at least string together more imaginative sentences haha. Thanks again!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
